Before becoming an actress, she started modeling as a young model. She won the Theatre World Award as "one of the most promising personalities in 1956-57" for her performance in The Potting Shed. Lynley's film career began in 1958 with the Disney film The Light in the Forest. Holiday for Lovers (1959), Blue Denim (1959) followed. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer - Female. She was nominated to the Golden Globe Award again for Most Promising Youngcomer Female a year later for Blue Denim.
