Madekwe was raised by an ethnically mixed family. She has a father who is Nigerian and Swiss as well as her mom is English. She was raised in the south of a London council estate, and went to The Brit School at age fourteen. It was the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is where she obtained an acting BA. Ashley Leggat grew up in Hamilton Ontario with an extended family. Her parents, Roy and Patty along with her four brothers, Brett, Todd, and Bram and Bram, were present. Ashley's athletic brothers played baseball in summer and hockey during winters. Ashley could not walk but danced. This led to the fact that as she grew older, she discovered Baby Ballet. Ashley began to develop a love of dancing shortly after she joined Baby Ballet. Until she graduated from high school, Ashley danced competitively in the top divisions in ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, acrobatics, musical theatre, lyrical and hip hop. She also won the top awards for soloists in every major dance contests, including International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance, among others.
